Right to work checker for businesses

Asked for your share code? Here's how to get it in about two minutes

From 1 October 2026, UK businesses must check the right to work of self-employed individuals who work on their jobs, not just employees. That's why a builder, firm or app may be asking you for a share code. It's quick, free and it's the same code employees use.

If you're not British or Irish

  1. Go to gov.uk/prove-right-to-work.
  2. Sign in with the identity document linked to your UK immigration status and confirm your details.
  3. Choose to prove your right to work. You'll get a 9-character share code starting with W.
  4. Send the code and your date of birth to the business that asked. The code lasts 90 days.

If you're British or Irish

You don't have a share code. Show the business your passport (in person or on a live video call), or they can use a certified digital ID app. Some firms may accept other documents from the Home Office's list, such as a birth certificate with proof of your National Insurance number.

Why it matters to you

A business that skips the check can be fined up to £45,000 per worker, so more and more firms simply won't let anyone start until it's done. Having your share code ready means you get the job.
